"I think it’s immoral," Jodi Jackson, who spent two years working at Barducci’s Italian Bistro in Winter Park, told WFTV. "I think it’s cowardice."
The Winter Park restaurant’s owner, Gregory Kennedy, gave no notice when he sent the Fourth of July surprise text telling more than 12 employees of the closure. They haven’t even been paid their final checks, Jackson said.

The Sunshine Strikes Back
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Miami New Times began a search for the best this city has to offer. In this distant past, there was little beach time and lots of crime. New Times’ first Best of Miami® issue gave the people hope. They discovered good places to eat brunch to grow like Jabba the Hutt, walk their mighty canines in the manner of Chewbacca, and quaff their Jawa beer.

It’s officially summer and our palates turn toward light, fruity libations made with fresh ingredients and clear spirits. Here in Miami, we tend toward vodkas, white rums, even cachaca and sometimes forget one of the most aromatic and versatile spirits in the world. Gin.

Different gins highlighting different flavor profiles — some having hints of lemon and orange, others spiced with notes of cardamom or coriander.
Ferrara is the Miami gin connoisseur for Beefeater/Plymouth which, besides looking great on a business card, means that he conducts "gin tours", inviting bartenders to sample gin at some of his favorite bars. The last stop on Ferrara’s tour? The Broken Shaker.
Ferrara told Short Order, "since this is one of my favorite bars, I saved the biggest and best stop for last."
This Sunday, June 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., Ferrara and the Broken Shaker Boys are hosting "Punch-Drunk-Love", a celebration of gin, sun, and ’90s hip-hop. Ferrara invites you to soak in some rays, go swimming, play ping-pong — and get punched. And by "punched" we mean enjoying several different gin-based punches.
The punches will be made with local Florida citrus, fresh herbs plucked from the Broken Shaker’s own garden, and tea. "Maybe we’ll also use some beets in one of the punches, since they’re in season now, Ferrara hinted.
The punches are a glass, or 0 for an entire punch bowl made with an entire bottle of Beefeater 24 (enough for your entire entourage). To get the party started right, Ferrara will be purchasing a bunch of punch bowls to share. "I want to start the day and get everyone feeling right."
Once you’re feeling great (and the sun goes down), stay for the 8 p.m. movie, Wet, Hot, American Summer, starring Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, and Marguerite Moreau. Getting punched was never so much fun.

One Cosmopolitan cocktail might be good enough for fans emulating ‘Sex in the City,’ but 10 New York Liquor Authority agents covering 35,000 bars, clubs and restaurants in the city indulged in ,481 in drinks and food over the past three years, records show.
New York State Liquor Authority inspectors are drinking away your tax dollars.
The probers are racking up pricey booze bills while investigating restaurants suspected of illegally serving alcoholic drinks outdoors, the Daily News has learned.
In one case, two inspectors checking out a Staten Island restaurant ordered six bottles of Bud Light, running up a tab, while checking to ensure the restaurant wasn’t violating liquor laws, according to records obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request.
The scheming State Liquor Authority inspectors jokingly call the practice “f—ing the duck,” referring to stealing from taxpayers, according to an agency insider.

Inspectors ran up a bill at the hip Bowery Hotel in New York City for a glass of wine, a drink of Veev Acai and two pasta entrees.

Agency spokesman William Crowley said the inspectors need to go in pairs, both ordering drinks, because restaurants would not seat just one person ordering one drink.
But a separate agency honcho quietly issued a memo cautioning investigators to be more careful following questions by The News.

“When an investigation requires two investigators working together, careful consideration should be given to limit the purchase of alcohol, or alcohol and food, to one investigator,” Director of Enforcement Pamela Westlake wrote in a June 13 memo.

‘When an investigation requires two investigators working together, careful consideration should be given to limit the purchase of alcohol, or alcohol and food, to one investigator,’ State Liquor Authority Director of Enforcement Pamela Westlake wrote to inspectors in a June 13 memo.
The note also warned the investigators to order the least expensive item on the menu.
Over the past three years, two or more inspectors ate and drank together 19 times out of 52 inspections checking for illegal drinking outdoors, the records show.
“It seems like the employees are taking advantage of the need to enforce the law by enriching themselves with free food and drink beyond what’s required,” said Dick Dadey, executive director of the Citizens Union.
The roughly 10 inspectors covering 35,000 bars, clubs and restaurants in the city expensed a total of ,481 in drinks and food over the past three years, records show.

State Liquor Authority agents downed drinks at Angellina’s on Staten Island, N.Y.
But Crowley said that’s a pittance compared with the 6,750 in fines generated by those checks.

“State Liquor Authority resources are used in a cost-effective manner,” he said.
At the Staten Island place, Angelina’s Ristorante, the two inspectors expensed — paying for a entrance fee and six bottles of Bud Light between 8:45 p.m. and 11:55 p.m. on June 2, 2011, records show.

The inspectors also ran up a bill at the hip Bowery Hotel for a glass of wine, a drink of Veev Acai and two pasta entrees.
On other outings they coughed up for two glasses of wine and one meal and side dish at the Living Room Steakhouse in Brooklyn, at Tokyo Pop in Manhattan for one drink and two meals and at Manetta’s Fine Foods in Long Island City, Queens, for a glass of red wine, a martini and two chicken entrees.
“That’s total abuse. There’s no reason to buy more than one drink,” the agency insider said.
Crowley argued that additional drinks are often required because it sometimes takes a while for investigators to be seated outdoors.

The heartbroken Jackson, who says she cooked at the restaurant, cried at times during the interview, saying she wanted to be paid from the "money he’s already made from us."
It’s not only employees out some cash. Customers were also left in the lurch when they learned Groupon deals they had purchased would no longer work at the defunct bistro.
"Now I’m thinking about how I’m going to get my money back from that," Lauren Bartolome told the TV station. "I don’t know what to do now."
She’ll get her money back — the station reported Groupon will refund customers who bought the deal if they contact the company.
It’s not so easy for employees, Jackson said.
"There are so many lives that this has affected," she said.
